Background of the study
This study evaluates how language functions as a marker of political affiliation within Efik community organizations. In Efik communities, language serves not only as a means of communication but also as a symbol of political identity and loyalty (Abasi, 2023). Community organizations often use specific linguistic markers, slogans, and idiomatic expressions to signal political alignment and support for certain policies or leaders. This research investigates the linguistic strategies employed in political communication by Efik groups, analyzing how language is used to forge group identity and mobilize political support. Data is gathered through discourse analysis of political speeches, organizational literature, and interviews with community leaders and members. The study aims to uncover the relationship between language use and political affiliation, determining whether certain linguistic features are consistently associated with particular political ideologies. By examining these dynamics, the research seeks to contribute to the broader understanding of language as a tool for political expression and social organization within the Efik community.
Statement of the problem
Despite the recognition of language as a political marker, there is a lack of systematic research on how Efik language use signals political affiliation in community organizations (Abasi, 2023). Variations in language usage, coupled with the influence of external political forces, may lead to fragmentation and ambiguity in political identification. This study aims to identify the specific linguistic markers used to denote political allegiance and assess their impact on community cohesion and political mobilization.
Objectives of the study:
To analyze linguistic markers in Efik political communication.
To evaluate the relationship between language use and political affiliation.
To recommend strategies for strengthening political identity through language.
Research questions:
What linguistic features signify political affiliation in Efik communities?
How do these markers influence group identity and mobilization?
What measures can reinforce clear political identification?
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it explores the role of language in delineating political affiliation within Efik community organizations, offering valuable insights for political strategists and community leaders. The findings will inform efforts to enhance political communication and strengthen group identity (Abasi, 2023).
Scope and limitations of the study:
Limited to Efik community organizations; excludes broader political discourse outside community contexts.
